Here is another article I wrote for http://ezinearticles.com some time back…
The original article can be seen at http://ezinearticles.com/?Why-People-Fail-When-They-Go-On-A-Diet&id=8225000
Here is a reproduction of the article as it appears in the ezinearticles website:
This is the second article in a series about finding a way of life that will give you the body you have always wanted without going through the misery of calorie counting or restrictive diets. For previous articles please search this authors name on this website.
The Mistake People Make
The mistake people make when they go on a diet is they don’t change their core thoughts and beliefs. Either they can’t lose the weight they want, or if they do lose it they put it all back on again. The old you put all that weight on, so you need a new you to release the weight and maintain an ideal weight. We as humans are governed by our thoughts-our thoughts determine our actions, and our actions give us the results we are currently experiencing. So bottom line… if you want things in your life to change, you are going to have to change things in your life. And the number one thing you have to change is your thoughts.
Think Long Term
Another mistake people make is they expect instant gratification. We live in a world of fast food and drive-thrus, and we expect life to be like in the movies where there is nothing but a series of highs… climax after climax after climax. The real world does not work that way. If you want things to change, you need to think long term and you need to do the right things long enough and consistently. Think about it… If you did nothing different from what you are currently doing, how would you look in 3 months? How would you look in a year, five years, and ten years? If you did nothing different how much time would have elapsed 3 months from now? 3 months right? If you did something different how much time would have elapsed 3 months from now? Yep, 3 months. So whether you take action or not, the time is going to pass… so what do you have to lose? If you want things in your life to change, you are going to have to change things in your life. Think long term-there are no short cuts, there are no magical overnight results, instant gratification does not exist, you have to do the right things long enough and consistently. Think consistency over intensity. Be persistent.
Your thoughts and beliefs could stop you getting what you want
Let’s see how your current thoughts are giving you your current results. Right now you are doing things in a certain way, but you know you should be doing things differently. There is a gap between what you are doing and what you know you should do. So you decide to make some changes and you start heading from what you are doing now to what you know you should be doing. Along the way you encounter little “obstacles”. These obstacles are your current thoughts and beliefs-think of them as your “internal programs” that run your life. Let’s say you are working on shedding some weight and you start hitting the gym to work out. However you have an existing belief that says “I hate exercise”. This belief is not in alignment with the new ideal you are trying to achieve. Your existing belief of “I hate exercise” is not congruent with your new thought of “I am fit and slim”. This non-congruence creates doubt in your mind, the doubt creates the emotion of fear, and the fear manifests as anxiety in your body. When you feel this anxiety you “bounce” off the “obstacle” of the existing belief and return back to what you were doing before.
Stepping back into safety
The sad thing is that by returning to what you were doing before, you are not getting what you want but you feel comfortable. Back where you are not getting what you want, there is no anxiety because there are no conflicting beliefs. So you stay bound where you are even though it is not what you actually want. At least you feel “comfortable” in your misery. When you learn to break through the fear and do what you know you should, you will experience Personal Freedom.
